Books are challenged in libraries all over Canada, by parents and groups who try to restrict what we read. Although people have the right to refuse for themselves materials they may view as controversial, they do not have the right to restrict the freedom of others. Censorship of books goes directly against the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the Ontario Library Association’s Statement on the Intellectual Rights of the Individual.
