Greeting cards will be banned from entering the prisons effective October 29th due to a significant increase in the introduction of contraband (drugs - mostly suboxon) coming in through greeting cards. Inmates will still have the opportunity to purchase cards from commissary and send them OUT to their families. The PA Department of Corrections has found another way to SHUT DOWN family interaction and isolate inmates

I have been hearing from so many of you who are terrified about losing this last shred of connection to your loved ones inside. My brother is counting on those cards to feel like a human being instead of a number in a cell. I am currently spending every night drafting formal letters to the Department of Corrections to demand they find a solution that does not involve punishing families.

Seeing this momentum grow proves I am not the only one who knows that cutting off these letters is just another way to break our families. Every person who steps up shows the department that they cannot hide behind claims of contraband to justify isolating our loved ones.

As i a fomer inmate of the PA DOC, i can remember how nuch a card met to my emotional and mental state. Inmates need love and support to gain the strength and courage it takes to begin a change.
There are inmates whose families can not visit for many reasons to name a few finances, distance,illness and to take that small but meaningful privilege away is being cruel to say the least.May God have mercy on the hearts of the Pa. Department of Corrections.
Stop trying to SHUT OUR FAMILIES CONNECTION WITH OUR CHILDREN, HUSBAND, BROTHER, SISTERS, MOTHERS, UNCLES, COUSINS, AUNTS. YALL SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELVES. SAD DAY FOR THE STATE OF PENNSYLVANIA CORRECTION INSITUTIONS SHAME ON YOU FOR KEEPING FAMILIES FROM CONTACTING THEIR FAMLIY THROUGH ENCOURAGING, HOLIDAYS, AND SPIRITUAL CARDS. SHAME ON PENNSYLVANIA PRISON SYSTEM.
I definitely disagree against for our love ones not to receive cards.the system is falling down from.the waist.

This is really ridiculous! We need to be able to send encouraging cards to our love ones. Stop this madness.

As a former Correctional officer, I think that the Dept of Corrections need to allow the cards in and screen them better to rid any contraband! Don't punish everyone for a few knuckleheads!
