Bottled water is expensive, costing up to 2000x more than tap water, even though many bottled water brands such as Dasani and Aquafina are simply selling filtered tap water, which you could get for much cheaper by simply buying a water filter. Furthermore, bottled water is less regulated, and less healthy than tap, because of chemicals such as antimony that can leach into the water from the PET. Not only that, but the production of bottled water, specifically the bottles, use a lot of energy. In just the US alone, the plastic bottle industry used enough energy in 2006 to power 1 million cars for the entire year. The production of plastic bottles also releases many carcinogens, and other health risks into the atmosphere, such as acetaldehyde, 1, 4-dioxane, and ethylene glycol, harming not only the workers in the factories, but everyone. After you drink the water, you throw it out. Although plastic bottles are recyclable, 80% of them end up in landfills, where they sit for thousands of years, or are incinerated, releasing harmful dioxins into the atmosphere. The ones that are recycled often end up being shipped far-away, such as to India, where instead of being recycled, they are downcycled into lower-quality plastic, with un-recyclable parts dumped into Indian landfills instead of our own. Even with all of its problems, many people still choose plastic water bottles because of their convenience, or because their tap water is unclean (only true in very few communities). To counteract this, the government should build more water fountains, so that people carrying reusable water bottles can fill up, and invest in public water infrastructure, to provide cleaner water for everyone. By signing this petition, you can be part of the move to reusable waterbottles, a cleaner, greener, and healthier alternative.
