We, the undersigned, oppose the toter-based pay-as-you-throw trash disposal currently under consideration for Brookline. While the intent of Brookline officials to foster recycling and reduce town expenditures on trash pick-up are laudable, the proposed bin or toter system is unfair and unworkable for the many multi-unit buildings in Brookline. Limited common space is already taxed by recycling toters and there is no room for more. They are unwieldy and too heavy for some residents to maneuver -- particularly in foul weather (remember those snow banks!) --or up and down stairs.

Currently, too many buildings store their blue recycling toters in view of the street. Add trash toters and Brookline will become Toter Town. That's not good for property values, will attract foraging animals, and could create a safety issue.

Pay-as-you-throw comes in many forms. Special bags or stickers for generic bags sold at local merchants could achieve the ends without putting an undue burden on residents.

Neighborhoods also come in many forms and a one-size-fits-all approach that works in those areas with driveways and garages is not going to work in the more densely built parts of town. Let's not pretend that it will.

Please sign ONLY if you are a Brookline resident. Thank you.
