We, the undersigned, support the NMU-AAUP Faculty in their demands for greater recognition, respect and a fair contract.

NMU faculty are committed to providing students with a quality education and they work hard to fulfill this goal. They deserve recognition, respect, and fair compensation for their contributions to the university. The Northern Michigan University administration’s offer of a concessionary contract will impose an annual net loss on faculty. For years, NMU faculty and staff have been told to “do more with less,” and these constant demands on their time and energy have taken their toll physically, emotionally, and intellectually. Stress and low morale lead to poor learning, living, and working environments for students, staff, and faculty. This situation cannot continue indefinitely without impacting the integrity of the institution and undermining its mission as an educational institution. We urge the administration and the Board of Trustees to review their management policies and attitudes and give the NMU-AAUP faculty the fair contract they deserve.

Updates

April 15, 2015

The stories shared by faculty about burnout are heartbreaking. I am currently compiling these experiences to present directly to the Board.

The momentum is undeniable now. Faculty deserve this contract and the administration is finally paying attention.

As an NMU alumna, I stand in solidarity with the faculty union. During my time at NMU, I knew that my professors were going above and beyond the call of duty to provide me with the knowledge and skills I needed to succeed after graduation. I knew that they did it for less money than they deserved. I knew they did it with less support than they deserved. It's time for the administration to acknowledge the exceptional work that the NMU faculty does and give them a fair contract.

A counter offer should be made to administration to cut their pay and benefits at twice the rate they proposed for faculty.

Stop padding the admin budget while the people actually teaching the classes get squeezed. Faculty work way too hard for this nonsense treatment.

Interesting how money is ALWAYS available to pay for administrators who have 'stepped down,' but are still on the payroll for 'special projects.'

We are professionals, we are committed; We want to increase enrollment and especially the QUALITY of the education that our students recieve. Our time, and our moral, are already suffering, we need the financial support of a GOOD contract.

Are administrators taking the same cut to their retirement as what is proposed in our contract?
