The science is clear, students' performance and their mental and physical health would be positively impacted by later school start times.

This petition requests that the Board of Education review the evidence and discuss the issue of later high school start times at an upcoming board meeting. We further petition the board to set a September 2017 deadline for placing this issue on the agenda.

This is an important issue which impacts the health and well being of all of our students. We, the undersigned, believe that the BoE should take a stand publicly, as to whether the issue is worthy of discussion and further BoE action.

Updates

August 1, 2017

Watching my own kids struggle through these early mornings is exhausting and I know many of you are witnessing the same daily drain. I spent the afternoon drafting a formal letter to the Board of Education to ensure they see the momentum building behind this request.

August 1, 2017

Seeing this kind of momentum feels surreal because it confirms that so many of you are watching your children struggle with these early bells every single morning. This growth proves that our community is finally ready to demand a healthier schedule for our students.

I would have thought that creating the best opportunity for children to succeed at school would be the mission of any school board. It is hard to believe that the Board of Education in Niskayuna would not consider changing the school start times, which clearly benefit students academic performance. This issue should be considered by the BoE and included on the next agenda.

While I know the board has already had some discussions about this issue, I'm adding my voice in support of continuing them. The logistical problems are considerable, but districts elsewhere are making it work. I also think reduction of homework load should be considered as we talk about any reconfiguring of the school day. It is another serious contributor to students' lack of sleep.

My children are not yet in high school- but there seems to be continuing data that comes out that support the later start times- I think we should at least have a serious discussion about how to go about this.

Please consider a later start time for HS students. Why should the entire student population need to abide by the sporting schedule, which is a much smaller percentage of the students. For once, do what's right for the kids and not for the powers in charge of the kids.

I am a recent graduate, but these past 4 years have been miserable because of the early start times and the large amount of homework.

I have four older children who have finished school already. Having to be out for the school bus at 6:20 am meant a 5:30 am wake up time. If the kids participate in sports or any after school activities by time they get home there is not enough time in the day to get school work done and still get a good amount of sleep to be productive and perform to the best of their abilities. I am not looking forward to the struggle of waking up early and not getting enough sleep with my last two children who are entering the 9th grade in September.

It's time to finally get this right. The research is pretty clear. Teenagers need more sleep.
