Nicholas Carroll for SBA Executive Vice President
Hello there! My name is Nicholas Carroll and I am hoping to become your new SBA Executive Vice President for the 2023-2024 academic year! You may have seen me around campus in my "comfy-cozy" sherpa jacket or heard me yelling in the hallway about some esoteric rule I learned in a Henning lecture. If this is your first time hearing of me: it's nice to meet you, and please consider me in your vote for the next SBA Executive Vice President.
During my time here at Detroit Mercy Law, I have been known to be a staunch and (quite) vocal advocate for creating inclusive and forward-thinking spaces in a place where so many perspectives converge. Over the course of this past year, I have had the honor to be the President of Outlaws, a student organization focused on the creation, enhancement, and advancement of the small but mighty Queer community here at UDM Law. In addition to Outlaws, I have had the great opportunity to serve on the Immigration Law Association (ILA) e-board as the acting Vice President.
Being a part of the leadership bodies for these student organizations has exposed me to the procedures and policies of the SBA and, its source of authority, the SBA Constitution. The Executive Vice President position holds the special power of interpreting the SBA Constitution, meaning the Executive Vice President ensures that any acts of the SBA are in accordance with the SBA Constitution. As I briefly mentioned earlier, I am an individual who wants to see that the institutions that we take part in are inclusive and accessible. The creation of these types of spaces under our current authority can only be achieved by utilizing the frameworks set forth in the SBA Constitution as our community sees fit. You could potentially call this approach as viewing the SBA Constitution as a "living, breathing document that was created by the people and utilized for the people." That's just an idea, though. Regardless, while you consider who to put into this role, I want to offer myself as a liaison between the general UDM Law body (yes, this includes you!) and the SBA Constitution.
Finally, I hope that when you contemplate your vote for new board members, you will consider how having a diverse representation of individuals in leadership positions can lead to the introduction of new ideas that intersect with the common goals of our legal community.
Thank you for your time! If you'd like to meet me and ask me questions, I'll be at the Campaign Fair on March 29 and am always available via email at carrolni@udmercy.edu. Onwards and upwards!
