Boardwalk Gaming, a member of the Surrey business community for 18 years and the owner/operator of Bingo Country on King George Highway, has recently submitted and presented a land use redevelopment proposal to the City of Surrey. Boardwalk has proposed to redevelop Newton Square Mall to include an upgrade of the current Bingo Country to a Modern Bingo Centre, which is a facility that retains bingo as its marquee game and adds a variety of additional entertainment options including slot machines. Unlike casinos, Modern Bingo Centres do not have table games and are limited to a maximum of 150 slot machines. They include food and beverage facilities and live entertainment. This proposal includes increased site safety and security measures which has been reviewed and supported by the RCMP. The City of Surrey would receive approximately 10% of slot machine revenue to use within the municipality by hosting the Modern Bingo Centre. Local charities and community groups, such as the Surrey Hospice Society, the Surrey Community Crime Prevention Society, Parent Advisory Councils, and youth sports organizations would continue to benefit from the revenues generated through activities at the Bingo centre. In the 2006/2007 fiscal year, the Provincial Government provided $9.4 million to 292 community organizations in Surrey. We, the undersigned, support Boardwalk Gaming in its plans to upgrade Bingo Country and Newton Square Mall.
