Dear Council Member Vacca,
We, the undersigned, are concerned about the proliferation of ill‐maintained and poorly located newsracks cluttering New York City sidewalks. From Queens to Manhattan to the Bronx, this quality of life nuisance is prevalent throughout our city. We ask that the New York City Council Transportation Committee schedule an oversight hearing on the newsrack law immediately so we can start working toward the solution. The appearance of newsracks has further deteriorated largely due to the Newsrack Law amendment of 2004, which removed the requirement to maintain newsracks free of dirt, graffiti or stickers. Furthermore, the New York City Department of Transportation, which regulates street furniture, has not effectively enforced newsrack regulations because of deficiencies in the current law and lack of personnel. We urge New York City Council to work toward improved policies to maintain newsracks and regulate their placement.

Walking down the block today reminded me why this matters because the clutter is still making it impossible for people using wheelchairs to navigate the sidewalk. I have been speaking with advocates about our next steps to pressure the committee for oversight. We are keeping the pressure on until these streets are actually accessible for everyone.

Seeing this grow makes me feel like we might actually clear these neglected eyesores from our sidewalks for good. Thank you for caring about the state of our streets as much as I do.

These abandoned, vandalized news racks are an eye sore that should be prohibited.
Abandoned "otdowntown" green plastic newsbox was dragged to 96 Chambers St. months ago from B'way---this street is being totally rebuilt and attempts to contact DOT and Manhattan Media to remove this dirty eyesore have been unsuccessful---so far. The box also interferes with food delivery people who work at Sophie's. Thank you.
totally agree. our neighborhood looks like a dump because of all these unmaintained racks.
There are three of these rusted things chained to a pole on my corner and nobody has put a paper in them in years. They just collect trash and block the sidewalk for strollers.
Get rid of them. Half of them are just empty hulks covered in graffiti and they never get cleaned off.
