WE THE UNDERSIGNED AS CONCERNED CITIZENS INSIST THAT A PARTIAL OR FULL LIQUOR LICENSE BE DENIED TO THOSE SEEKING TO OPEN ANY ESTABLISHMENT SERVING ALCOHOL AT 11 NEWEL STREET, BROOKLYN, NY 11222 WHICH IS IN VERY CLOSE PROXIMITY (LESS THAN 200 FEET) TO AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, CONVENT, CHURCH, CHILDREN’S DANCE STUDIO, KARATE SCHOOL AND GYMNASIUM USED BY CHILDREN OF THE COMMUNITY. BACKGROUND: The commercial space at 11 Newel Street is being reopened as a new bar/restaurant serving alcohol seven days a week. Formerly the Continental, the “new restaurant bar” is directly across the street from the ST. STANISLAUS KOSTKA SCHOOL & CONVENT (less than 25 feet away). For decades, the landlords of 11 Newell enabled its commercial tenants (CONTINENTAL) to operate a business that caused a consistent public nuisance that significantly diminished the quality of life in the neighborhood. NOW THE LANDLORD PLANS TO BRING A NEW BAR TO 11 NEWELL STREET. The landlord is proposing that this establishment remain OPEN UNTIL MIDNIGHT on weekdays SERVING ALCOHOL SEVEN DAYS A WEEK with LIVE MUSIC! Too long churchgoers and residents of Newel Street and especially children attending ST. STAN’S and the HAMILTON DANCE STUDIO have been subject to inappropriate, detrimental, and often times violent behavior because of patrons of the business operating at 11 Newel Street. Based on collective experience, bringing back a business serving any type of alcohol will likely lead to an increase in the destruction of private property, disorderly conduct, public intoxication and urination, loitering, littering, diminished quality of air induced by outdoor smoking, unsafe street conditions, excess use of limited street parking, unnecessary foot traffic, loud music and excessive noise until all hours in the night, seven days a week.
