Please keep the conversation relevant and appropriate. Things that aren't school appropriate damage the credibility of this petition. We really want this to work. It will be for everyone's benefit.

Any alumnus will agree that AcLab was part of what made high school easier to navigate. Missing one day of school requires visiting four teachers, not three. Two days means seven teachers. In addition, the band and choir programs require daily practice in order to maintain the high quality of music Ladue is known for. Getting rid of AcLab also makes it harder to stay in touch with counselors and teachers from past years, complicating the college application and recommendation process. AcLab is vital to the success of Ladue students in high school and beyond.

We as a student body should get a say in this. We can't let the board make school more stressful than it currently is!

The block system was vital and is what taught me how to manage an increase in work. It held me responsible for using my time responsibly and effectively and reaching out to teachers when I needed help rather than waiting for them to talk to me when my grades suffered. Any alumnus would agree that Ac Lab was the period they needed most to keep mentally and academically organized, and the time they needed to ask for help, make up missed assignments, and collaborate with classmates on studying and group projects.

All of you are judging the schedule negatively because you have very little knowledge about it. It is a purposeful installation in the school to benefit us not hurt us. This petition is useless. Even if every single student signed it... what would happen? You think the school is going to abandon 1 year of work and research because of an uninformed petition? Wait until you get the details before you pass a judgement. And make sure it's an intelligent one next time.

My daughter is now a sophomore at college and attended Ladue High School. She loved the block system. It made it easier in two ways. If you miss a day of school you only have 4 classes to worry about. If you have a big assignment you have at least a couple of days to work on it before it was due. Also, I am not sure about textbooks but they are big and heavy and my daughter often had to bring them to school. I don't think in the 4 years she was at Ladue she ever used her locker because it was not convenient to any of her classes when she needed it. She only had to bring school supplies and textbooks for 4 classes rather than 7. Many teachers did not have textbooks in the room like they do in Middle School so often she needed to bring the book to school. She had two backpacks and alternated them each day which made having the correct supplies for each day simple and easy. This schedule to me seems confusing and awkward. I understand some of the thought behind it but I believe the block schedule offers the best option. Kids in high school usually have a great deal more extra curricular activities and having only 4 classes to concentrate on each night makes it more manageable as well as allowing better planning of homework throughout the week when they know they may have busier nights.

Well, nice try, but if this an example of the research used by the people who designed this schedule, they might try finding something relevant to our school. The study you linked to is looking at schools who use a 4x4 block schedule, which we do not. The current high school schedule is what is known as an A/B block schedule. In addition, the study is about an entire state, not a high performing district like Ladue. Before we go blowing up the existing schedule, shouldn't we have a problem to fix? You know the old saying - "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!". Well, what's broke here? No one seems to be defining that, unless you are talking about a small minority of the district. And then the plan seems to ignore any costs to those it is not designed to help. Furthermore, the study you linked to seems concerned with cost savings; it's rather agnostic on student achievement and in fact if you read it closely, it has a lot of praise for the block system, even if it's talking about a block system that isn't ours. There is also this rather troubling phrase about the hybrid system being proposed in the paper: It is plausible that the benefits shared by students, teachers and administrators will translate into increased academic achievement for all students. Plausible? So we're being asking to trade a known good for something that MIGHT occur? Isn't it also plausible that there will be REDUCED academic achievement? I don't know about you, but the district gets once chance to educate a child and if they screw it up, they get to change things but they've screwed the child up forever, and that's not exactly a risk worth taking. It's a little like saying "Sorry the patent died, but we'll do better next time." Next time for whom? Most of the benefits in the paper you cite are cost savings, and I've never seen anyone mention that as a goal of our proposed high school schedule change, unless that is a hidden agenda item.
