My mother had cancer. After months of deterioration she died peacefully on Christmas Day. Her funeral was on the 3rd of January, but I had a presentation on the 7th and a deadline on the 8th and that's when everything fell apart. I was back in Salford less than 72 hours after her funeral.

When I contacted Salford Uni to find out my options they told me that I could not extend my deadline but could submit late (4 working days in accordance with University guidelines) and submit a PMC for such lateness. I have not been offered any alternative other than re-sitting in August and graduating a year late. Punishment for losing a parent?!

I do not think that this is good enough. If you have suffered a tragedy you will know that 4 days is not sufficient time to push your brain into gear. Two week extensions would ensure the student had adequate time to come to terms with any loss and then focus on an assignment.

In the workplace you'd be looking at 2 or 3 weeks compassionate leave. Salford want you back the week after.

Yet 4 days is what Salford University deems to offer. So I am creating this petition to call for a 2 week extension for all students that have lost an immediate family member so that you are not backed into a corner over rigid regulations and the have extra time you need.

If you are a current or former student of Salford University, or just feel that people grieving should be shown more sympathy, please add your name to my petition which will be taken to the board of directors in a bid to obtain more sympathy and understanding for students that have had to face tragedy.
