Democratic Process for New Orleans Superintendent of Schools

Decisions for education, for the future of communities need to be informed by the people of those communities. Education is a partnership, and schools are most effective when they collaborate meaningfully to meet the needs of families and scholars they serve.

Let the people make the decisions about their schools!

The community should have full control of their schools and the committees that run them! Community-control now!

THIS IS WHAT DEMOCRACY LOOKS LIKE!

I am in Baton Rouge and see we are in the crosshairs next. What has happened to the education of this generation of children is criminal and all in leadership positions should be held accountable.

The schools are a central place where children can be invested in with care, knowledge, social and life skills, and love. Stop prioritizing political careers and corporate structures over the lives of young people and the wellness of our communities

I agree. From what I understand of New Orleans, it will take a local educator committed to community schools to bring healing and sanity. In Los Angeles, where I am from, charter schools were intended to bring choice to parents, an alternative to a local public school that had no competition and often failed the students. They were never intended to be the entire menu... The public school system is the anchor. Maybe its similar to considering only the in-laws the family. Without the shared blood, the core is lost. Also, having been involved with writing a charter, they are often headed by people who are very idealistic and convinced that this education thing is simpler than y'all are making it. Teaching will never be simple because children, society, institutions have real complexities. The local community of New Orleans needs to be heard in the selection of the superintendent or efficacy and sanity will never return.

It's time for the charter school experiment to end. Charter schools that fail are tossed after a few years, The all charter school system has been failing for 15 years. What other city would allow this to continue?

It's time to rebuild the system.

Additionally I would like the board to support Dr. Joseph Bouie plan of a moratorium on charter schools and go back to the drawing board on developing a new direction from public education in New Orleans. Most importantly I recommend that the school board immediately develop legislation that eliminates ACT 91 which gives unheard of authority to charter school boards and return the control of public education to he duly elected school board!
