This petition is to be presented to the appropriate Minister for Child and Family Issues. To get all the "first time" mothers training in how to care for their newborn before they leave the hospital and earlier. The greatest percentage of child abuse are the "infants under 12 months of age". Some knowledge is far better than no knowledge at all. All maternity hospitals should be providing hands on training in "baby care and what to expect when they bring baby home" classes before they leave the hospital. It should be mandatory. Now new mothers are leaving hospital without a clue how to look after a totally dependant infant. It does not always "come naturally". Like "breast cancer nurses" I would like to see a nurse/volunteer available to new mothers should they need extra help before they get so desperate that they harm their defenceless child.
