We, the undersigned, urge our locally elected officials to act now to find a replacement for The Animal Foundation, operators of the Lied Animal Shelter.

Background: Our community animal shelter needs new management! The Animal Foundation has continually mismanaged OUR community shelter since taking over the contract in 2004. In 2013, 53% of the animals that entered The Animal Foundation were killed. That’s over 21,000 animals, more than all of the Los Angeles city shelters combined. Cities such as Seattle, Reno, and Austin have been able to save 90% or more of the animals that enter their shelter by using the progressive practices of the No Kill model.

The Animal Foundation currently uses outdated, failing policies. They justify killing an animal for medical reasons if they are obese, in need of a dental cleaning, have an ear infection, or even simply a sore on their tail from it wagging it up against the kennel (happy tail). Out of convenience and cost savings they leave half of the cat kennels empty. They charge up to $250 for an adoption fee, even while the other shelter in the county charges $65. They kill dogs as soon as their legal three day hold is up, even if there are empty kennels at the shelter.

When you sign the petition, please mark that you would like to become a member of No Kill Las Vegas. There is no fee and it will allow us to have a larger influence with elected officials as well as keep you informed as the movement grows. (If you signed this petition at the Las Vegas Pet Expo, then you do not need to sign again.)

The stories in the comments are heartbreaking. Reading every single one while I prepare our formal proposal for the council.

I have done American Eskimo Dig Rescue since 2007. I tried to work with Animal Foundation but they just want to kill dogs. They do not want to help me save them.

Since Lied Animal Shelter and The Animal Foundation have proven time and time again that the animals are not the most important part of their jobs, it's time to find a new organization who will make homeless pets in this city a priority!

I saw for myself that every other cage in the cattery was empty. If their adoption fees were more affordable or consistent than they wouldn't have to euthanize/KILL so many healthy animals.

Stop this cruelity! Bring your adoption fees down...that alone would encourage more folks to adopt. Stop with the ridicules "medical" excuses for killing these animals. If given the proper support and encouragement to the overall community, each animal could indeed find their forever home.

This "shelter" also charges all of our local rescue groups large fees to save animals! This is an outrage! The rescue groups survive on donations alone! They are making money off of animals they will otherwise kill!

Please end the unnecessary killing of thousands of animals. Many other shelters in other cities in other states and even in our own city are doing much, much better facing the same problems with backyard breeders and hoarders!

Enough killing people's pets. Incompetent fools. Accountability is imminent.
