We need to play baseball this Summer ..... Provided everyone follows the guidelines that should be established prior to the actual start date of baseball.

Hoping baseball can start soon with new safety precautions in place i.e. masks should be worn when kids can’t distance by 6 ft (at bat, while on base, in the dugout) as a nurse working in the heart of the pandemic in NYC we can’t risk getting to the place we were last month again. Let’s get baseball started but in a new way! Thanks!!

I think it is extremely important for our kids to play this summer. I think their mental and physical health will benefit far more than staying at home. I am confident that playing this summer can be done safely. I think the overall benefit to our children will be immeasurable. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help get our baseball and softball players back on the field this summer.

Give them a chance to get some sort of normal back. Let them try to get outside and enjoy the competition and life lessons of baseball.

Mr Governor,
I am an orthopedic surgeon here in Staten Island. I am writing to ask that you consider making a push to restart youth sports. The fact that children very rarely develop any symptoms with COVID-19 and are at minimal if any risk must be factored into this decision. What we must not forget is the fact that sports and doing activities children love and interacting with their friends is crucial to their emotional and psychological well-being. Forcing young athletes to stay at home and not play team sports places them at severely increased risk of depression and suicide and worsened overall health/obesity. Youth childhood suicide rates will probably exceed the youth death rate from COVID-19. These stay-at-home orders may be harming our children. Being a father of a 9 year-old boy who lives to play baseball (RCBC -USABL travel ball and Snug Harbour LL) and hockey (Bayonne Rangers travel hockey), I have a first-hand look at the impact of this on youths. Being a physician I also believe I have more incite and experience with how best to handle this pandemic and how to reopen and restart our lives.
One solution I have is to allow outdoor youth sports (baseball, soccer, tennis, golf, etc.) to restart as soon as possible with some changes. Have players practice social distancing by not sitting in dugouts (or team benches) and instead have them spaced 6 feet apart on the stands (usually used for spectators) when they are not on the field. Only have the coaches in the dugout and the player on deck in the batter’s box. Have the umpire behind the mound instead of behind the catcher. Have all adults wear masks for their own safety, however, there is literature indicating wearing masks has no benefit (even the N95 masks cannot filter out free SARS-COV-2 virus because it is 0.3 microns in size (too small)). Cloth or paper non-N95 masks are even less effective. I believe it should be up to the player (and his parents) if a mask should be worn by the player himse
