Recent news like the Cleveland Ohio abductions, the murder of Trayvon Martin, and the public responses to both provide conflicting examples of consequences children face when being followed or attacked by a stranger. We need a NEW agenda for our children’s safety for this time. What are our children really supposed to do when approached by strangers? We need an effective national conversation about child-stranger safety. Parents and community members want solutions NOW. This National Conversation Should Include the Following Topics: ➢ Public Safety Behavior Campaign targeted at kids and teens ➢ Public Safety Deterrence Campaign targeted at adults and predators of children and teens ➢ New updated messages for parents to share with their children to protect themselves ➢ Messages for neighbors who want to help ➢ Training for public safety officers These messages would replace overwhelming fear, confusion and violence with clear information, education and training. As the first lady of the United States we applaud your efforts in children’s health. We encourage you to work with the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, the National Institutes of Health, the National Child Safety Council, Safe Kids Worldwide, the National Center on Missing and Exploited Children, and any other community leaders willing to contribute to this conversation. Our children need us to act now. Sign the petition and let’s get it to First Lady Michelle Obama.
