We ask your support and sign our proposal to form a New AERA SIG that will emphasize Socio-Political Issues in Science and Mathematics Education. According to the AERA SIG bylaws, the proposal to form a SIG-in-Formation must contain the signatures, either hard copy or electronic, of a minimum of 75 AERA members. With the formation of this SIG we hope to support and build a national and international research network among critical mathematics and science educators and researchers who generate diverse and new research approaches and focuses on sociopolitical dimensions of math and science education (e.g., issues of power, identity, representation, racisms, classism, and sexisms, what are the science/math issues of power and how are they enacted in formal and informal context? How do communities become empowered and act around issues in science and math? Who has power, when, where, and why? How does power influence our ability to even conceive of what is possible or probable within a science and mathematics-learning formal and informal contexts? How can science and math address injustice and further justice?). Our intention for the SIG is to operate in a way that offers social gatherings (both face-to-face as well as through social media) that support scholars (especially junior scholars scholars of color, women, and people who identify as LGBTQ, and supporters of this work) to navigate issues of teaching, research, mentoring, and taking a stand in the academy and beyond.

I fully agree such a SIG is necessary, but also feel it should include reference to socio-political actions. Knowing about issues is not enough; citizens need to act to address them!

The formation of this SIG, with sessions for presentations, would compel me to rejoin the organization and I would happily join this SIG.

This new SIG will provide a much needed space for more focused critical engagement & transformative action within AERA

Great idea. At the very least it raises the foundational link between justice and education.

In what ways do the discipline privilege certain ways of thinking and knowing, and what impact does that have on calls for just, equitable, and inclusive education?

Although I'm a literacy scholar, I am deeply committed to issues of equity and justice in all classrooms. Therefore, I celebrate this proposal. It is necessary, especially in times when STEM has become the rule of the land, but only from a technocratic approach and void of any ethical and social dimensions. Let's hope that AERA will listen!
