We, residents of Nevada County, CA, advise our County Board of Education to invest their budgetary funding into our students' education and not into funding a study or investing in new County Office of Education administrative offices.
Background:
Nevada County schools have experienced declining enrollment since the downturn in our economy in 2007. Today, we have half the students in our county schools we once had and our students are testing poorly. High school enrollment stands at what it was before Bear River was built, and we have seen many schools actually close.
In light of our enrollment situation, the Nevada County Superintendent of Schools, is proposing a new facility for administrative offices. The current complex on Ridge Road and Nevada City Hwy is paid for, as is the Terry McAteer Complex with the warm water pool. Other programs under the County Office of Education are located at Sierra College, Juvenile Hall, and Park Avenue School. Additionally, the COE leases a facility on New Mohawk Road that houses the Charter Schools Business Services.
This idea of a new administrative facility was first introduced in 2013 and has been promoted on and off since. The proposal was first to combine the six sites into one facility, however, when challenged on this concept it has variously been proposed to combine either four sites or just the New Mohawk Road and Ridge Road sites.
To this end, an action item was placed on Wednesday November 12th's Board of Education meeting agenda stating:
Shall the Nevada County Board of Education approve a proposal from School Services of California OR Total School Solutions to conduct a Facilities Study?
We have started an online petition for our county residents to voice their opinion on whether this is an appropriate use of our students' education funds. The study alone is projected to cost at least $10,000. plus expenses.
If you agree that education funding belongs in our children's classrooms and the County Board of Education and Superintendent Hermansen should abandon the proposal of new facilities for administrators please sign our online petition!
We will present it at their next meeting!
Thank you!

The momentum behind this petition highlights a clear community consensus regarding the responsible use of educational funding. It is encouraging to see this many residents confirm that our classrooms should remain the primary focus of the board.

When we have so many children that there's a need to make NCE & Hennessy public schools once more. When there's so many students that there's a need to have both Bear River & NU as separate high schools, instead of the obvious & painfully clear need to close one of them as it is now. Then the county administration can entertain such a costly facility expansion & consolidation
Do not waste school budget money on this. Administration does not need a new building. Period. Make what you have work better. Stop sending out countless extra checks for substitute teachers from the same account each pay period. Consolidate services. Stop wasting tax payer money. It doesn't grow on trees. These days the trees are just burning up.
Administrators don't need a new facility now. There are much better uses for this amount of funding. How about putting more art and music back into the schools?!
It seems to me that the administrative staff keeps growing while our schools are scoring progressively lower and lower. It seems then that the most important thing for the Board to address is how to rectify this downward trend instead of spending its funds and time on new facilities to house an ever growing staff.
"Public service" is now a thing of the past. Our government agencies have at least as good as if not better facilities than the private sector and spending tax monies from people living with less. There is no need to have "the best" of everything in the public/government sector. This was never the intention. If administrator's want fancy digs, have a bake sale. The Union posted the median salary of the private sector versus public (including salary, medical and other benefits and pension plans) and there is no comparison. Public servants need to comprehend the pot of money is not unlimited and should only be for "necessities" not "wants." For education, not comfort. Fiscal responsibility with taxpayer monies.
A little top heavy, me thinks.

It is time for this Superintendent to think about out students instead of herself and her staff. To spend the money on a new facility at this time is nothing but a waste of tax payer money. To spend $10,000 on a study to see if we even need a facility is absolutely irresponsible of this board to propose. It is time that this Superintendent do her job and take care of the students in this county.
