Dear New College Student,

This is a petition to repeal the New College Council election results and have a fair, democratic election on the grounds of multiple violations of the New College Council Constitution, and a lack of involvement from the New College community resulting in a voter turn-out of less than 100 from almost 4000 eligible New College voters.

Below are the specific violations of the New College Council elections charter:

  • Constitution was violated: elections were not advertised by the elections committee 10 days prior to the elections.  In fact, they were not advertised as per the Constitution requirements and the majority of New College students were not aware of the elections – hence the small turnout of under 100 voters.

  • Certain candidates were unjustly disqualified from running in the elections on grounds of missing documentation while other candidates were allowed to run without proper documentation.

  • A member of the Elections Committee was caught adding over 60 members to a party’s election campaign page on Facebook, NOT the general elections campaign page.  This is a blatant bias on behalf of the elections committee and on its own, is grounds to stop the election

  • The CRO did not respond to an appeal for an all candidates speech during elections.  We have had speeches for the past three years and they are an integral part of the elections process.

  • There was no option to reject the uncontested VP of Finance candidate while all other uncontested candidates were exposed to rejection votes.

  • SC&LD which is the York University body which oversees all clubs in the university did not take any action when we attempted to contact them and bring all of the above violations of the constitution to their attention.  By being complacent, they encouraged a non-democratic and unfair election.

Sign this petition with your name, student number, and e-mail address to have the election results repealed, and have the elections for your student government conducted fairly, and properly in accordance with the New College Council Constitution.
