NC High Schools Need To Test Before Holiday Break

Our student's scores would be considerably higher if we thought of them before we thought of the entertainment industry.

I think the state of this State’s is in great peril if continue along this same path. Wake up legislature!

As a senior I find that my test scores would have been much better over the past four years if testing had been placed before break.

I have said this all along!!!

This needs to happen!!!!

Education policy and regulation should make sense to those getting educated. Our current system with rules such as "Monday closest to August 26th and Friday closest to June 11th" does not take into account: A) Students who graduate in the spring cannot begin community college during summer session because the schedules are not conducive; B) Winter graduates cannot start any college in January because they cannot graduate until mid-January, after college starts; C) High School students have to go for Winter/Christmas Break, then come back for a few days and take exam, rather than having a natural break; and D) January has historically been one of our highest winter-weather months for snow; we do not get as much in December. In addition, the current school calendar law benefits a small subset of the tourism industry at the detriment of those in education. Local control is needed to make decisions in the best interest of each community.

As a high school administrator, this needs to happen!!

This is a “duh” decision. Find a better starting point in August and adjust the schedule to that the semester ends IN DECEMBER. Essentially, do what is fair to students and best supports their overall education.

It is a complete farce that we care more about a few tourism dollars than we do about the success of all of our high school students. If we have to have block scheduling then we need to allow schools to start and end the first semester before the winter break.

This is what's best for students.

I am a school teacher and parent. This year testing has been spread over 3 weeks due to weather. How can anyone think this benefits our students? Give local districts control over their own calendars!

Middle school and elementary students are struggling too due to Benchmark and Check-In exams

Students before tourism. Students deserve to take exams before the winter break.

I do believe testing should be done before the kids go out on break.

When the kids go back they barely remember what they learned. Starting school the second week of Aug makes much more sense instead of starting a week or less before Labor Day only to be out the next week, also.

This schedule is in the best interest of the students!

Time to put education before tourism. Give local school districts control over their own calendar.

I am an educator in Currituck County at the high school level. I agree and support this movement 100%.
