I’ve been in education in NC for 22 years. This has been needed since it was changed in 2004. The calendar law KILLS high schools. The current rules are NOT student friendly. They ARE NOT what is best for students. Work hard to get this changed!

I totally support school starting and ending dates being left to the discretion of local school systems. Each system should strive to complete Semester 1 prior to dismissal for Christmas break.

Please change the calendar requirements. The entire state was closed last week. Today I had students taking an exam today that hadn’t had classroom instruction for 2 weeks. I am lucky, I have dedicated students who were emailed me to stay on top of their studies.

Our students need to start school early enough in august to have the first semester completed by mid December. Thank you!

I can’t see how having exams after Christmas was ever a good idea. More time to prepare I think was the thought but who goes home on Christmas break to study. I would love to see how exam scores have changed since the test after break change. I’d presume some are much lower. I’m sure some students suffer because let’s face it most wont study and during break time there is much to forget. Who could blame them for not wanting to prepare for a test during break they’ve been hitting the books all semester. Stressing during the holidays over a test when they return is nonsense and the ones who likely made this decision never had to deal with this idiocy. Children need that time to enjoy family and be pleased with the fact one semester is behind them and they can begin anew when they return. I always looked forward to a fresh start after Christmas. Not all semesters are sunshine so a new start is just what they need.

It is a waste of students and teachers time to have to reteach or refresh students. It is also waste of. Valuable school day to learn more

This has needed to be done for a while. They push so much knowledge on you so fast and it's really memorize and cram. They need to just do exams before Christmas the students would get better grades and the school would in turn look better statistics wise.

As a retired high school teacher I truly believe it is in the students best interest to have exams before Christmas. I can prepare them for their future college experience

Having taught for 39.5 years, I can certainly agree that exams should be held before Christmas. There are several reasons:
1. Christmas break should be just that- a break. Students aren't going to study during their holidays, and who can blame them?
2. Time spent reviewing because of "Christmas Break attrition" could be spent for better things like enrichment or remediation.
3. The law passed to change the school year was passed because of political pressure from the tourism industry- not to benefit students. Shouldn't students come first in the school environment???
4. Schools have, for years, focused on aligning processes, but this is totally unaligned with Early College.
5. Students need to have a break without the cloud of exams hanging over their heads. Life is already too stressful. Why add to it?
6. What works for one area of the state is not necessarily the best for the entire state. LEA's should have the autonomy to set their own calendars. Each LEA knows their students' needs better than a few legislators imposing restrictions on the student population of an entire state.

Students are more focused before Christmas break when we have exams during that week. Plus it Aline’s with our Early College High Schools and works better for students in traditional high schools taking college classes. Another problem when students come back from Christmas vacation they need a period of time to review where we were when they left because they do not study at all over Christmas!
