Muslim Students and their Families Call for a Ban on Acts of Desecration Against Islam and the Qur’an on Campus
Across campuses, freedom of expression is meant to create spaces for learning, dialogue, and respect — not hatred, humiliation, or the deliberate targeting of faith.
Yet in recent years, we have witnessed disturbing acts of Qur’an desecration and anti-Islam demonstrations that go far beyond peaceful debate. These are not expressions of free thought — they are acts of hate that incite hostility and create fear among Muslim students.
This petition arises in response to a recent incident at Howard University, where a group identifying as Hebrew Israelites publicly desecrated the Holy Qur’an — kicking, stomping, and degrading it in the street. A young Muslim student who witnessed this act confronted the group in defense of his faith, and tensions escalated to the point where a physical altercation nearly broke out on campus.
A video of the incident soon went viral across social media, drawing outrage and heartbreak from Muslims and allies around the world. The global reaction underscored the seriousness of the act and the urgent need for universities to protect students from such displays of hatred and provocation.
Every student deserves to walk onto campus feeling safe, valued, and respected.
Islamophobia and the public desecration of what millions of people hold sacred violate those principles and harm the spirit of community that universities are meant to uphold.
This petition calls on university administrators, student governments, and national education boards at Howard University — and all universities nationwide — to take decisive action by:
• Banning demonstrations and actions that desecrate any religion’s sacred texts, including the Holy Qur’an.
• Implementing stronger policies against hate-based expression and harassment.
• Fostering interfaith understanding through education, dialogue, and restorative justice — not through silence in the face of hate.
We are not asking to silence free thought — we are demanding protection of dignity and mutual respect for all faiths.
Freedom of speech should never be used as a shield for hate speech or religious provocation.
By signing this petition, you are standing with Muslim students and families everywhere who believe that our campuses must be spaces of knowledge, not intolerance.
Together, we can help ensure that no student’s sacred beliefs are mocked, disrespected, burned, or used as tools of division.
