The marching band requirement subjected my son (who is also an athlete in [sport] and an advanced student carrying a full load of IB/AP classes to 3 months of stress anxiety, getting 5 hours of sleep per night, and frustration. The marching band does nothing to advance a student's musical education as the music is all relatively simple and no professional musicians actually marches when they play. I spent hours petitioning Mr. Keller and the FHS principle for a more fair an equitable policy (other athletes are permitted a pass), but my petition fell on deaf ears. In addition, I know of dozens of other families that whose children have been driven out of music because of this stupid policy, including our older 2 sons.

My daughter loves music and [played 2 instruments] prior to starting high school. However, she is also a [sport] player and so could not commit to marching band. The music/band requirement at FHS has meant she could no longer continue music and she has had to take visual art courses, which she does not connect with, rather than music, which she loves but has had to quit.

I have a current fhs student and an incoming one. With marching band required my kid will quit music after 3y in middle school band, sad. I'd love to see other opportunities.

FHS marching band is a burden. Heavy time commitments, late night rehearsals and long weekend competitions disrupted our family life.

My son had no interest in marching band, but joined (with misgivings) in order to be allowed to play the instrument he loves in other school bands. He spent his first semester in high school exhausted, stressed, and angry that he was being pressured to participate to the exclusion of other activities that he loves. He won't be in marching band again, so will have to give up playing at school and in the out of school ensemble in which he currently participates.

My son is a jazz musician, has no interest in marching band, and was denied an exemption by Mr. Keller. It has been very difficult to support his music without school support.
