"Murder OF the Mendel "

When our dad took us to our first movie in Saskatoon, we entered a golden palace with red carpets curving softly up the stairs. Watching Kirk Douglas on the Nautilus in his striped shirt battling the creepy octopus was just as thrilling as gawking at the fancy balconies around us.
In Kinsmen Park we chugged around on the popular train, climbed up the saddles to ride the bobbing horses. In later years we enjoyed the banana trees in the tropical Mendel greenhouse across the street.
Have we ever really recovered from the destruction of our Capitol Theatre ?
When our favorite train was ripped out of the park, it did not find a suitable home at our Railway Museum for Sask children to enjoy.
We still remember when Allan Sapp shyly hovered near his prairie paintings in the Mendel. Or when Warren Peterson, not so shy, aroused saints and sinners with his realistic drawings. From serenity to controversy, the Mendel featured provincial talent along with Lauren Harris' frosty fixture.
Gail Bowen's Saskatoon-based novel entitled "Murder AT the Mendel" seems rather prophetic now as we are faced with the Murder OF the Mendel.
Will the next decimation, as Rik Stolar (familiar family name to us from 7th Ave. store next to Wilson School ) mentioned be our Bessborough Hotel ?
Or how about that blatantly-curvaceous Broadway Bridge ?
Happy Valentine's Day to our Mendel Gallery from many lifelong admirers.
