This is not about multicultural curriculum. It’s about truth. It’s time to tell our children the truth and teach our children the truth.

As an elementary educator, I believe it’s extremely important to educate our youth on ALL parts of this nation’s history, including the parts we are ashamed of. We should consciously be making an effort to include works and experiences by people of color and have curriculum that engages youth to actively be anti-racist and socially aware of the ongoing systemic racism that they can work to break down.

I went to a private school that followed IB standards and our teacher picked some heavy literature that was multicultural and stories I treasure to this day. That shouldn’t be a unique or radical experience. This should be the standard. Zora Neale Hurston should be as well known as ANY WHITE FEMALE AUTHOR FROM THAT TIME.

All cultures need to be taught and accepted. We need more culturally responsive teachers to help children understand different races and cultures.
