The full-time non-tenure-eligible faculty of the University of La Verne are valued colleagues, who play an important role in our educational program. However, they are currently appointed from year to year, with no job security, and thus, no real academic freedom or ability to participate independently in faculty shared governance.

Out of respect for their contribution and their role in the academic enterprise, the faculty of the University of La Verne over the academic year 2018-2019 amended our Faculty Handbook to provide for three-year terms of appointments for those full-time non-tenure-eligible faculty members who have completed three or more consecutive years of satisfactory full-time employment as faculty members.

At its most recent meeting, the University of La Verne Board of Trustees approved the following language for the University of La Verne Faculty Handbook.

Chapter 3.3.1.4 Promotion

Upon promotion from Assistant to Associate (where applicable), or upon completion of three academic year contracts for those not eligible for promotion or those hired at the rank of Associate or above, full time non-tenure-eligible faculty members shall receive a Letter of Appointment for a three-year period of employment that is presumptively renewable. During the initial three-year period of employment or any renewal period, the employment may be terminated for cause, as described in Chapter 4.3.1, including termination or material modification of the entire program of which the faculty member is a part, as provided in Chapter 4.

New Handbook language goes into effect July 1, 2019.

However, faculty members entitled to these Letters did not receive them.

We call upon the University of La Verne Provost's Office and HR to immediately issue Letters of Appointment in compliance with Chapter 3.3.1.4, superseding any prior Letters, before the new term of appointment period begins (July 1, 2019).
