We have a cup issue. The single-use cups that hot beverages are sold in are not recyclable because of the inner wax lining. In 2017, Starbucks alone used 3.85 billion cups per year globally, which is 242.6 million pounds of trash per year and about 1 billion pounds of carbon dioxide. If you use 1 cup a day, you would create 23 pounds of waste a year, or 87.6 pounds of carbon dioxide.

But, the answer is simple. First, we need to stop using cups and start bringing mugs. Less than 1.5% of customers at Starbucks bring their own mugs.
