MRC Student Coalition Demands

As a Humanities instructor who uses the work of bell hooks, Edward Said, Eduardo Bonilla-Silva, Michelle Alexander, and other scholars of color in my curriculum, I find it very unacceptable that a school with Seattle University's resources does not meet the needs of its diverse student body. The students of the MRC occupation continue the legacy of other students and scholars who came before them. We should not still be having this conversation in 2016. The actions of Dean Kelly, and the failure of the Matteo Ricci College to meet to provide a diverse curriculum is an insult to their students of color, to their white students, to the Humanities, and to the Jesuit tradition.

The issues you've brought to light are present throughout our campus. I'm a graduate student with the College of Nursing, and many of us have echoed the sentiments you've included here. We came to this school for an education in social justice. We encountered something wholly different.

I, as a student in the MFA Arts Leadership program, am dedicated to seeing these changes not just in MRC or our program, but school wide. Without decentralizing whiteness in our academic environment, we will never be fully inclusive of ideas.

I support the MRC student coalition because #MRCHurtsMe . Institutionalized racism plagues our campus and nation, and it is not the responsibility of people of marginalized identities to "forgive" or to teach. Forgiveness is a gift and is a process of healing, not one that any person who has committed or contributed acts of oppression is entitled to. These students (womxn of color in particular) embody what it means to lead and value inclusivity and justice. It is time to decolonize education and think critically about the ways in which a euro-centric curriculum and racist administration and faculty continue to perpetuate oppression. It is time to allow students to gain access to the education that they were promised. Students will not be idle when those in power cannot even admit their own internalized biases nor create an accountable system that upholds its very ideals. #DearDeanKelly

I stand in solidarity with you and your efforts to improve your education. As consumers of that education, this is you right. As future leaders, it is your responsibility and legacy to demand improvement.

In support of the MRC Student Coalition, I call upon Seattle University to uproot the systematic racism that is ingrained within MRC's curriculum, and reform Matteo Ricci College by choosing academic leaders and curriculum dedicated to empowering students of color in their efforts to become effective leaders for a just and humane world.

I am a former Seattle Prep humanities teacher with a masters in theology from Notre Dame. I support these demands and am deeply inspired by the student struggle.

I am an alumni of Seattle University and support the demands listed in this petition.

I Agree we need to burn all books on Philosophy in the courtyard, then wear brown shirts in unity for all POC's. Next we dismantle the reichst...congress and enact the final solution to end the white scourge who have done nothing at all productive for society. Afterwards we will all learn about the valuble contributions of Aboriginals to the modern world while drinking water, as any other drink not related to my direct bloodline would be cultural appropriation.
