As an MRC graduate, I am in complete support of these changes. I graduated from SU as a double degree in Humanities and double major in Women&Gender Studies and Literature, and found I was more fulfilled as an interdisciplinary student passionate about social advocacy in the Women&Gender Studies program rather than Humanities, and often felt isolated as a POC in the MRC program. Thank you for demanding space to make the necessary shifts that I wanted that program to be so desperately.

As a MRC Humanities for Teaching alumna I completely agree with the statements made by the MRC coalition. So many aspects of this statement hit close to home for me.
"A non-Eurocentric interdisciplinary curriculum, which:
1. Decentralizes Whiteness and has a critical focus on the evolution of systems of oppression such as racism, capitalism, colonialism, etc., highlighting the art, histories, theologies, political philosophies, and socio-cultural transformation of Western and non-Western societies."
Yes please! I took the socio-cultural transformations series while at MRC and we read one dead white male from Western cultures after another. I did not learn how to actively dismantle patriarchal, heteronormative, classist, and racist systems of oppression as a teacher until I left MRC to attend graduate school at another university.

It's time for MRC and all of Seattle University to address the fact that it is a racist, sexist, oppressive institution. U can try to individualise me, tell me its just my own experience n I'm negative, but I'm holding hands with generations of other incredible students lookin around wondering where our relevant education is?? I paid this university n they gave me nothing but unsafe spaces, white professors incapable of providing me with relevant course work, and an administration that seeks to destroy personal bonds and collective learning. I may be an alumni but I'm not done bein loud abt this. Dean Kelly represents this horrific institution and continues to uphold its ridiculous values of elitism and Euro centric history. It's time for Actual Change. Show up for MRC today and show up for SU today. #DearDeanKelly #MRCHurtsMe

I am in full support of this petition and its demands. I have greatly benefited from my education based in the humanities and I am proud of my fellow and current MRC students for speaking up and demanding change!
I do not however support the demand of Dean Kelly's resignation. While I was and am not privy to the full story or understand the situation in its entirety, in my dealings with Dean Kelly my voice and feedback were heard and respected (I am a white, middle class, female). I hope that given the gravity and noise she would be able to shift the trajectory of the college. However, if she cannot unlearn whatever bias or indoctrination that prevents her from leading this change I do think she should hand over leadership to someone who can.

Hey SU students. Read this article and before you dismiss it because its from the WSJ, it holds some very valuable information about what really works in increasing equity on campus.

Don't fall into group think and broad based platitudes that sound good because they are repeated over and over again. I was part of an attempt to increase race and cultural awareness in order to prepare employees to respond appropriately to clients and to open up opportunities for all staff to reach their fullest potential, the intention failed miserably for exactly the same reasons detailed in this article, authored by respected social and cultural scientists.
And SU leadership: please read this article to help guide you to make real changes that will result in what you intend.

A college is a place to cultivate the minds of tomorrow's citizens and workers. We are living in a global community now. The students need to be prepared to be successful now and the future. The economic future is in China, India, South America and Africa. America needs to prepare to deal with this and figure out U,.S can play a role.
