As the City of Atlanta proposes a large-scale homeless development in the Mechanicsville community, following decades of minimal investment in the neighborhood, the undersigned come together to request that the City of Atlanta deliberately invest in the community. Atlanta and Fulton County can achieve this by:

  1. Expediting the development of high-quality and visually appealing market-rate homes on the old McDaniel-Glen lots.
  2. Issuing RFPs for developing abandoned or underutilized parking lots and vacant land.
  3. Offering tax incentives to developers and businesses that build and/or operate within the community.
  4. Providing twenty-year tax abatements for homeowners and apartment complexes in Mechanicsville.
  5. Allocating funds specifically for cleaning and maintaining the entire Mechanicsville community, particularly around the proposed development area.
  6. Promoting the Mechanicsville name and community-approved logo throughout the neighborhood to highlight it as a great place to live and raise a family.
  7. Collaborating with railroads and the Federal Railroad Administration to reduce train horn decibel levels at the McDaniel Street crossing, or establishing a partial or overnight no-blow zone.
  8. Providing financial and other support for youth programs designed to assist at-risk youth in Mechanicsville.
  9. Supporting the establishment of a computer lab at the Dunbar Neighborhood Center.
  10. Enhancing lighting in the underpasses located at the boundaries and entrances of the neighborhood.

As we have previously stated, the Mechanicsville community does not and will not support the development of 405 Cooper for the homeless, whether it is within a mile or just a few blocks from us. While we are not against homeless initiatives, our community is already overburdened, and the city needs to distribute these initiatives across areas that can accommodate them within their thriving neighborhoods. We are already surrounded by the unhoused Gateway and other supportive housing projects (within 1 mile from us). Enough is enough. As a south-side community in the shadow of the city and the capital, we deserve better consideration, which can begin with the investment ideas mentioned above.

If the City agrees to these requests, we, the undersigned, believe that Atlanta will demonstrate a genuine commitment to investing in our often-overlooked community and show that it values the Mechanicsville community and its residents.
