We would like to change the severe dress code at Morton Middle. We understand that unfit clothing can perhaps be a distraction, however, we think, and most students would agree that this dress code is very harsh. For example, I personally know a girl who wore a shirt with the “Vincent’s Drug Store” logo on it and was asked to change and never wear it again on the school’s campus because it promoted unsuitable content for school. I am aware that we are trying to extinguish any tasteless clothing, although, it wasn’t as if she was encouraging any display of criminal matter. We believe that the Morton Middle girls should be able to wear at least mid thigh length shorts, tank tops, and leggings. We should not be punishing girls for being their selves but teaching boys not to over sexualize normal female body parts. When we pull a girl out of class, to correct her so-called "inappropriate" clothing we are disrupting her learning time that the state pays for and conveying the message that her body is more important than her learning.
