We are a community of Moroccan Americans and their friends. As Americans, we believe in building stronger relations by sharing our culture with others and by learning about theirs. We believe in a vigorous exchange of ideas and in discussing issues in a friendly context of social networking. We also strongly stand behind the role the US can play as a defender of human rights, democratic processes, and minority cultures at home and abroad, precisely because of the historic pluralism of cultures in Morocco. It is, therefore, of great concern to us that poorly informed arguments about Morocco and its relations with the US are disseminated by a group of lawmakers, who, one would expect be better educated and more objective when it comes to foreign policy. The letter signed by 27 members of Senate advocates for the reversal of the US decision to recognize Western Sahara as Moroccan territory, while expressing concerns about the fate of Sahrawis resulting from an ongoing political conflict between the self-proclaimed S.A.D.R. and the Kingdom of Morocco. The issues in that letter are manifold. Morocco is the first country to have recognized US sovereignty; that historic relationship has only strengthened over time, initially through shared defense and security exercises and partnerships. However, common interests between Morocco and the United States are wide-ranging and go far beyond defense sales and counterterrorism discussions. The reciprocal recognition of the territorial integrity of the oldest ally of the US opened the door to further growth that would benefit the people of both countries – the many forms of investments, humanitarian and educational projects, green energy explorations, and expanded traded are just some of the options on the table. That is not to say that the US should ignore injustice for the sake of political gain. But the injustice in this case would be to allow US policy to fall victim to disinformation by fringe groups wit

But a 2002 opinion of the U.N. Office of Legal Affairs made clear that colonizing powers cannot simply hand the keys to another country.
