On behalf of Community Health Workers working throughout Rhode Island please accept this letter of support for the Rhode Island Department of Health’s (RIDOH) Division of Community, Health and Equity (CHE) application to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Notice of Funding Opportunity Number: CDC-RFA-DP21-2109, “Community Health Workers for COVID Response and Resilient Communities.”
As CHWs in Rhode Island, our roles vary, from helping residents navigate the complex social service systems to supporting them to manage their chronic conditions as part of their care team. Since the start of the pandemic, the need for our services has expanded significantly. As CHWs, it is in our nature to give 110% to our job, but even still these days we are stretched thin. We know the additional support from this grant will benefit all of us and in turn the health of Rhode Islanders.
As Community Health Workers, we look forward to continuing our close relationship with CHE and other state stakeholders to build stronger and healthier communities for all Rhode Islanders, particularly when our most vulnerable citizens have suffered in the wake of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Our mission, vision, and existing body of work closely aligns with CHE’s vision that all Rhode Islanders will have the opportunity to achieve optimal health.
We are committed to working with RIDOH, CHE and its partners to achieve the common goals of improving health equity and the health outcomes for all Rhode Islanders. We strongly support CHE’s program application.

CHW's are essential to the healthcare system and the overall quality of care /well-being of the residence of RI. We need more CHWs, especially bilingual ones.

CHW's are not adequately recognized with pay even when we become certified with a specialty. We give so much from the heart and get so little in return, to sustain ourselves and our families financially. We all work within our communities and therefore know exactly where, what and how to intervene. Our community needs are cultural/personal/ individually based and we do relate and are capable of getting to the roots of our community needs, concerns and barriers.
I am in support of CHW in the community. We have a wonderful lady who has done tremendous work in Smith Hill. We hope we can keep her.
As the ED of the National Association of Community Health Workers, I wholeheartedly support the advancement of my CHW colleagues in Rhode Island to sustain and integrate CHW leadership and expertise to improve the health status of all RI residents.

The overall health status of so many people change due to support they receive of the Community Health Worker. One of my clients was very sick and homeless for about 15 years, only because she never had the right support. She was very depressed. Now she laughs and tells me that she is happy. She did not have any friends, now she has an apartment and friends. Her health and everything else changed in less than one year. Rhode Island needs more CCHWs.
