As you may know, the implementation of the Common Core was done without thorough field research and was done without a democratic process. States were told to sign onto the Common Core or lose Race to the Top funding. Part of the promise connected to the Common Core was that examinations would encourage creative thinking and not be driven by multiple-choice thinking. However, this is not the case. NYSUT’s board recently withdrew its support for the Common Core standards as implemented and interpreted in New York until NYSED makes major course corrections to its failed implementation plan and supports athree-year moratoriumon high-stakes consequences from standardized testing.
