Lost one of the best history teachers I ever have because the administrator had a personal issue with her. I would hate to see another school lose a great teacher for a ridiculous reason such as this.

So sad and wrong to lose a great teacher that is dedicated to her profession and has such a intelligent positive impact on her student learning, their lives, her department and her colleagues throughout the school. Take heed of the outcry because sometimes some people don't realize how good they have something until it's gone.

I can easily say that the history/ social studies department at MHS had a massive influence on me. I learned about what it meant to be a critical reader of our past, as well as an avid writer about the way government functions. These skills are crucial to my current profession as an administrative law judge employed by the state of New York. Without the autonomy granted to my teachers back in 2003-2007, I would not be where I am today. Renew the Social Studies Supervisor's contract and maintain the department's ability to educate its students with the flexibility and sensitivity required.

The history department offered some of my favorite classes at MHS. They were impactful to me as a student and now as a teacher because the history department faculty infused their curricula with passion and insight drawn from their own lives and expertise - and used their experience as teachers to implement curricula based on the needs of each student cohort. For any humanities curriculum to be successful, instructors must be able to use their discretion to implement standard curricula in a way thay meets the needs of the students in the room. Otherwise, why hire professional, experienced educators? In my career as a teacher, it is a rare week when I do not look back on the conscientiousness, creativity, and dynamism of my instructors in the history department at MHS as a model. Please do not rob future MHS students of the classroom experiences I so benefited from. - Shannon Stephens, Faculty at The City University of New York

As a proud MHS Alum (Class of 2002), I was very fond of our social studies dept. I had the best teachers who always encouraged me to understand and appreciate American history, US Govt. and Politics, Art History, and World Studies in the best way possible. Those teachers are the reason why I majored in History (along with Politics and minored in Economics) at Rutgers and pursued a Masters at NYU in Int'l. Relations and East Asia Studies. Furthermore, I thank this wonderful dept. (along with other subjects) for shaping my analytical mindset. It's helpful in the field I work in and something that I'll forever cherish. Please don't change the current structure/leadership of this great dept!! The current student population will highly benefit from this!

As an MHS alum ('02), I fully support this petition. The education that I received was better than the $15K/year private school I had attended prior to loving to Montgomery in 1998 and enrolling in the Montgomery Public School system. Today's youth should be afforded the same opportunity!

I am a MHS graduate ('97) and have three young children in Montgomery Twsp. schools today. I chose to raise my children here in large part because of the excellent education I received myself, with particular note of my US and World History classes in high school. I had the distinct privilege to have Mr. Mason teach those classes and they were invaluable to me. Mr. Mason had the latitude to tailor his approach to make the maximum impact on each of his students, and he was incredibly successful. I find it alarming, and unacceptable, that the current administration would limit the current faculty's ability to innovate in their methods of teaching. Given the challenges we face in 2017 and beyond, it is crucial to empower our educators to effectively illuminate the multidimensional lessons of history, so future generations are not damned to repeat its mistakes, or fail to thread its wisdom into their success for years to come.

The social studies department at MHS made a huge impact on my education as a high school student. The teachers and staff of the department want nothing but the best for their students and go above and beyond for them consistently. They should be encouraged to continue with their methods not reprimanded for attempting to personalize education for the students' needs.

As an alum I can say that the MHS history department is incredible. They care about their students both in and outside the classroom. The staff is passionate, driven, caring, empathetic, and above all else, knowledgeable. They are the reason I am the person I am today, and to alter their department without their input would be a huge mistake. I beg you to reconsider.

Some of the best teachers I have had at MHS have been from the Social Studies Department. The social studies classes that I have taken at MHS have allowed me to think critically about history, and to analyze how it relates to current events. I greatly benefitted from the way that the history classes are taught at MHS, and not allowing teachers to personalize education for their students would only have a negative impact on the students' growth.

Without the History department at MHS, I would not be where I am today. As an artist, and as a political activist, history is of extreme importance to me. Throughout my years as a MHS student, I was extremely inspired by the different teaching styles and methods that I experience, and can confidently say that my history classes were often my favorite to attend. I was always asked to think critically, challenge myself and my understandings of the world, and most importantly, was allowed to grow not only as a student but as a person. Having Mr. Flug as a freshman was one of the best thing I could have asked for, as he is the most inviting, understanding, and caring teacher I've had throughout my years of education. He always made class as engaging as possible, made it possible for all students to be a part of learning, and wholeheartedly taught about history from a place that only he could bring to the table. Same goes for all the other history teachers I encountered at MHS. Allowing teachers to teach with their own flair and style, is what really makes students motivated to learn.
