Many families with disabled children struggle with transportation and are in need of wheelchair accessible vehicles. Private health insurance does not cover the cost of accessible vehicles, and the coverage provided by Medicare is limited, and often not enough to help families get the vehicle they need. The cost of vehicle modifications, and previously modified is high, and out of reach for most average Americans.

Without safe transportation, many disabled children become confined to their homes and isolated from the community. No one should be forced to remain home and miss out on community activities because of transportation, a luxury so many take for granted. The coverage provided by Medicaid should be enough to help families purchase accessible vehicles. If the need is there, Medicaid should pay for modified vehicles outright.

We the undersigned are concerned citizens who urge our leaders to act now and revise Medicaid policies to provide adequate coverage to families in need of accessible vehicles.
