The Football Association of Wales (FAW) has recently decided to enforce a ban on football clubs running, or participating in, competitive mini-football tournaments for children under 11, ignoring the wishes of the clubs, managers and parents of the players. Whilst we support the idea of sport for all and encouraging as many children as possible to play in friendly league matches every week during the season, we see no reason to have clubs prevented from organising competitive tournaments after the season has finished. Well-attended tournaments also raise much-needed funds for many clubs, which helps to support grass-roots football. Football IS competitive. Learning to win and lose is important for children

Updates

February 12, 2009

The feedback from local clubs has been overwhelming since we launched this push. I am now reaching out directly to the board members at the FAW to demand a meeting about these tournament restrictions. Text three other coaches today and ask them to sign this petition so we show them we are organized.

Let them play. The fa knows nothing about grass roots.

So fed up with this. Everyone gets a medal nonsense is ruining it for the kids who actually train hard. Bring back real football.

My son works his guts out to get better and now he has nothing to aim for at the end of the season. Joke.

Total madness. How are they supposed to learn about sportsmanship if they never play for a trophy or a result? Kids arent stupid.

My lad loves the competition. It makes him work harder and learn the game properly. This ban is just soft.

Ridiculous decision. These tournaments are the highlight of the year for the kids and they need the money to keep the club running.
