Opposition To Uranium Mining In The Millet Brook/Falls Lake Area

****Thank you to all who have signed this. Unfortunately after creating it we were informed that any petitions the Provincial Government must come in the form of an actual physical signature. We now have petitions available to sign at Lakeside Variety in Vaughan, Pothier Motors in Falmouth, Baldwins Nursery in Falmouth, and Mosaic Market in Windsor
This petition is in opposition to the proposed development of Uranium Mines in the Millet Brook area. Resource development needs to be done in areas with low impact to established communities. Millet Brook is an extensive river that eventually culminates in a beautiful waterfall for which a prominent lake in the area is named (Falls Lake). This is a popular swimming hole for the entire community of West Hants. The lake contains a provincial park, several municipal beach/launch areas, a DND camp, and eventually flows into Pisiquid lake in the Windsor Downtown area. The lakes around Millet Brook are home to many full-time residents and cottage owners, and has seen substantial growth in the last few years with many high-end properties. Uranium exploration is done primarily through hydraulic fracturing or open pit mines. Both of these options will severely contaminate ground water with cancer-causing agents and threaten the health and safety of the local residents. Based on geological reports reviewed this appears to be one of the more substantial deposits in the province, making it a prime target for major development. The risks to the local population however far outweigh the benefits. The entire area around this picturesque community has already been ravaged by the development of 3 separate wind farms. It is not fair to ask us to further sacrifice our health and property values. Please reconsider the request for proposals in this area and focus on resource opportunities in less developed areas. By signing this petition I voice my opposition to the Millet Falls uranium mining proposal and agree to have my voice heard before the Provincial Government of Nova Scotia and the Municiaplity of West Hants.
