Midwives have helped me safely and joyfully deliver seven of my babies out of hospital. We did not need or want physician oversight for my very low risk, natural pregnancies and deliveries.

This is shocking. Midwifery autonomy needs to be not only protected, but promoted. That a MANA official would push to see the requirement of physician oversight shows a grave lack of concern for women who will inevitably lose their right to birth outside of a hospital or with a midwife at all.

Dr Bennett’s actions and words that are contrary to MANA’s stated mission are appalling coming from the president of said organization. She cannot continue to sabotage all of the hard work of midwives and their supporters by remaining in this position. Please remover her as soon as possible.

As an independent and autonomous midwife, I love practicing collaborative care and connecting my clients with whichever providers they may need for various situations. However, a requirement to be "supervised" or otherwise connected with a physician would make my practice impossible, as well as most other CPMs and CNMs in Denver. It also makes no sense practically. Please keep midwives autonomous

We have worked very hard in Arkansas to get autonomy for the mothers. There are no doctors who can sign for supervision of us. Their insurance would shut them down. You are being very inconsiderate I’m going backwards in the fight for freedom for Midwives.

Going on my 3rd prenatal journey and birth with CPMs I would have it no other way. And I have had medical complications, yes, but have been beyond well cared for by my midwives and medical team as have my children. Never did we feel we were in harm's way at any point and that is with my own medical background/training and understanding.

This initiative will endanger health of women and children. Read the research on stellar outcomes of midwife led systems. That is very different than a midwife dropped into a system.

In my experience working with hundreds of pregnant clients as a massage therapist, women who gave birth under a mid wife's care received far more attention, instruction, and had a better overall experience than those working with doctors. This is an awful direction for women and children all over our country.
Shame on her for not advocating for what MANA stands for in the first place. Safety of home birth with access to care from many providers, but not oversight by physicians.

Dr Bennett is clearly not supportive of MANA's vision and mission. She should immediately step down from (or be voted out of) her position as president if she does not believe in those things that the organization represents. Her position does not only injure midwives but the families that they serve. Time for new leadership!

I am an RN, CPM, LM and soon to be FNP in California. I agree that having a Doctor be the MANA president is absolutely insane. How did this happen in the first place. Please get her out of our midwifery board of directors she has no place there at all. In CA we as Licensed Midwives have not had supervision since 2014. Skilled midwives all over the nation should have the same opportunity to practice. Informed choice of providers is essential part of safety in birth settings just as much as practice and emergency preparedness.
