MANA is supposed to be an organization for defending the autonomy of midwifery in the United States. We are specialized care providers and the MMoC (a MANA construct) can only be fulfilled without the interference from physicians who do not believe in our model. To have a representative of MANA state that they will no longer support our cause is to betray midwifery, it’s roots, and the many of us who have worked tirelessly and with incredible amounts of opposition to fight for the human rights of our clients.

When 98% of births in the U.S. occur in the hospital and we have one of the highest maternal mortality rates, the problem is not that out of hospital midwives need oversight from hospital physicians, rather we need more midwives to practice outside of hospital settings.

Free the midwives. The US has had a rising maternal mortality and morbidity rate for years, over 98% of births occur in the hospital, and we're really still blaming OOH birth for poor outcomes.

Midwives need to be recognize and supported for the autonomous and skilled practitioners that they are, their practice should not require the oversight of medical physicians.

As someone who fled the hospital system after an unnecessarily traumatic first birth in a hospital who went on to have a positive second birth in a free standing birth center this is so infuriating. I do not want the medical model of care. Look at data, that model is doing far more harm than good for low risk people. This is not just nonsensical this is dangerous

Stop! We need autonomous midwives!! They save lives. I would rather give birth without anyone if I couldn't see a midwife. Probably safer than going to the hospital to be mutilated and traumatized.

As a former MANA board member, I am appalled. I dropped my membership of MANA of 25 years standing last year, depressed and disappointed by its weakened states and poor leadership. Heartbroken

I learned about birth from women giving birth and the people they chose to attend them. What women can do when they are supported in that entrance into great mystery! Isn't that what midwivery is, to lay with a woman giving birth?
