No Methyl Iodide in California!
Methyl Iodide is a new toxic chemical recently partially approved for
usage by the California Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) and the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) with high opposition in the United States.
This chemical will replace Methyl Bromide, the pesticide used mostly on
Strawberries and Raspberries. Monterey and Santa Cruz Counties are most at risk
by this chemical since they use the highest levels of Methyl Bromide
(approximately 1.5 million and 600,000 total pounds in 2008, respectively).
Methyl Iodide is four times more toxic and carcinogenic than Methyl Bromide. If
we can convince Monterey and Santa Cruz Counties and the City of Watsonville,
two major ag communities, to oppose to the use of Methyl Iodide, we can send a
very strong message to the EPA and California's DPR. Sign the petition and save
our communities!
