I am a Trauma Counsellor and therapist specialising in Combat Stress-PTSD. I am also the Co ordinator for Canine Concern Care Dogs. I have seen how the interactiion between a canine companion supports those with mental health issues. The dog's become enablers for those who would be otherwise unable!

Dogs can transform people's lives by providing companionship and a focus for people who are suffering. I believe that this is a vital initiative.

In 2008 I attended a conference which included a speaker called Bee Harries, plus her dog Bertie. He was an amazing support to Bee and she was trying to raise awareness of the importance of support dogs for people diagnosed with mental ill-health. As somebody who has had several dogs over the years I was a keen supporter of this concept and began the process of trying to raise awareness. Sadly, before we had got very far, Bee passed away in the Spring of 2009. I am delighted to see that the idea of mental health assistance dogs has arisen again and would thoroughly support this.

Mental Health Assistance dogs are a must just like guide dogs etc. I cannot function or go out without my dog as she gives me the strengh to go out and speak with people.

I have mental health issues & have recently been forced to move to a one bedroom place due to the room tax. They have just decided recently residents cannot have dogs. I rescued a dog recently on the morning his owners were going to have him put down. I do not know what i would do without this dog, he is the only normality i have in my life and my only friend, but i do constantly worry being able to afford to keep him on a low income, vets bills and if the Housing association finds out i have him.

As someone who has battled with mental health problems for over 30 years I now find myself virtually unable to leave my house due to panic attacks in public places. I am aware that I can purchase a dog which would help in general but without mental health service dog training or them being recognised legally I wouldn't be able to take such a dog into the very places I would need it most. Please recognise that mental health issues can actually be a real disability and allow us a real help .

I suffer from depression and anxiety. My dog helps me a lot. Sometimes by just being there, she knows when I need I'm not doing so good or my anxiety is increasing as depending where we are will lie next to me or want cuddles and even jumps into my arms if we're out. Please enable people like me to take our dogs where we most need them, with us at work or social situations.

About time this much needed service is implanted. I'm lucky enough to have my own dog, she always knows when I'm feeling bad. She's always there got me no matter what.

This is such a necessary cause. Giving people confidence and indipendance. This is life changing

I have personally known, that when I was very unwell, a friend's dog, was the only creature able to penetrate my mental state at the time. While there are many specific assistance tasks, which dogs can be trained to help with, their presence alone, can be life saving and invaluable.

Being able to train my dog to be a recognised assistance dog would be life changing for me. It would enable me to gain more confidence and be more independent. Frankly I find it shocking that the UK is so far behind as dogs have been used to aid health and wellbeing throughout history.

My pets have always been a life line for me. I have bipolar disorder and rely on my pets when am feeling unwell to get me up in the morning, take my medication and get me moving around the house. Their love and affection is unconditional and they don't stigmatise or judge like a lot of people do. I am in full support of this campaign it's very needed!

I currently rely on my parents to get out of bed in the morning let alone cope with working on my PhD. A registered assistance dog would help me to cope with my anxieties about the world and it would free up my parents so they could work normal hours again.
