The Mobile City Council voted to approve our building permits this morning. We are now transitioning our focus to finalizing the construction timeline and site preparation. Thank you for maintaining the pressure required to reach this resolution.

Final supporters
The Meditation Center of Alabama has been denied permission to build a Buddhist Meditation Center on private property owned by their directors. Permission was denied despite the fact that their property is properly zoned for building of such a facility. The Meditation Center is now appealing to the Mobile AL City Council to overturn the Planning Commissions denial. The Planning Commission gave as a reason for the denial that the "proposed use (of the facility) is not compatible with the surrounding area."
The 7 acres of private densely wooded property owned by the director of the Meditation Center, Lar Nimityongskul, would be the building site for the new modest Meditation hall and a guest house for the teaching monks to stay in when they are in town conducting meditation retreats and teaching sessions. Because of Dr. and Mrs. Nimityongskul's generosity, meditators and Buddhist practitioners would have an opportunity to practice meditation in peace and quiet rather than the busy commercial thoroughfare where they have been located for the last seven years. During this time over 700 people have come through the center and learned valuable life changing meditation skills and helpful precepts from Buddhist dharma talks. The center welcomes people of all people who are seeking inner peace through meditation regardless of race, religion, age, gender or ethnicity.

The growth of this petition has captured the attention of local news outlets. I am currently preparing a formal letter to present these signatures to the Mobile City Council for their upcoming review of the Planning Commission decision.

As a veteran who suffers from ptsd meditation had done far more to aid my day to day struggles than the V A ever could. I thank the Maker everyday for finding the meditation center...the family and the middle path.
Only in Alabama would other people try and stop a privately owned, meditation center. I thought Freedom of Assembly & Religion were both part of the Bill of Rights. Maybe it is only reserved for conservative christians.
I have benefited from attending the Meditation Center of Mobile Alabama's guided meditation and believe that the building project will make positive use of the land and offer citizens of all backgrounds a place to learn more about themselves and another culture. Sincerely -Molly Gish
I cannot imagine why this would not be accepted in the community. I have attended meditation with this center and have found it to be a place of peace and loving welcoming. This could only help the community if they would only give it a chance. I wish them much success.
Freedom of religion is a right granted by the US Constitution, the denial by the Planning Commission of Mobile is obviously based on religions discrimination against Buddhism, the 4th largest Religion in the World and the fastest growing Religion in the western world.
There is no reason they should not be able to have this center. There are churches for other religions all over mobile, some even in shopping centers. Its not the right area for a Buddhist meditation center in the woods but its ok for a church to be between a pet store and a dollar store, Make that make since.

I support this petition out of concern that this proposal has not received the same fair and unbiased consideration afforded to more familiar religious practices. Our community is strengthened when we uphold equal access and respect for all peaceful paths of reflection and faith.
