The city council reached a decision this evening and voted to approve the new ordinance allowing backyard hens in Medford. I am deeply appreciative of the time everyone spent contributing to this result. We can now look forward to seeing these small changes take root throughout our neighborhoods.

We, citizens of Medford, Mass, support amending the existing zoning ordinance to allow up to 6 pet hens (no roosters) for personal use as pets and egg production.

My young son learned how to take care of chickens at a summer camp a couple of years ago and wanted a pet "fluffy" chicken as a result. When told that we could not have one he didn't understand why. I couldn't explain the "why" since I didn't understand the reasoning either. Makes no sense to me.

I have received eggs from friends and family from backyard chickens and love them. Even New York City allows people to raise chickens. Certainly Medford should.

There *is* precedent for poultry being kept as pets in Medford. Here's a link to a photo of "Duck Martha" and her feline friend at 78 Winthrop Street: https://www.flickr.com/photos/boston_public_library/7065284367/in/photostream/

It's time Medford updated their policy on zoning for chickens. My mother grew up in Medford and always had chickens even a goat at one point in the backyard . There is space enough and people are careful enough that we can allow this practice again on a small scale . Malden allows you to have chickens in the yard . Let's do this!

I love chickens - and so do children. I grew up in Berkeley CA and we had chickens in our yard. They're great for gardens, as well!

raising chickens is harmless and provides a direct connection to your food source. Chickens can make great pets too! Medford residents ought to be able to care for and keep chickens safely in an enclosed back yard.

It would be great to have a source for eggs and an opportunity to engage in animal husbandry.
