Let's listen to the science. We are one of the wealthiest counties in the nation. We can make this happen!

This is a public health issue. Adolescents need more sleep for healthy development and aren't able to sleep early. Either switch the start times of elementary and high school, or invest in more buses and drivers. Other jurisdictions manage to do this. There's no reason Montgomery County can't.

Our schools schedules should be determined by science, not the convenience of administration. Give our children school start times that allow their young brains and bodies to function at their best.

If we are a county that strives to do what is best for kids and make data-informed decisions-- the evidence is there.

The science supports allowing high schoolers to have 8:30 a.m. or later start times. While the change came too late for my generation, I am proud that through the hardworking efforts of parental and community advocates, my former school district in Anne Arundel County made this transition in 2022, to ensure students can reap the physical and mental health benefits from age-appropriate school start times. As a resident, I support the call for Montgomery County Public Schools to do the same.

As a Clinical Psychologist and a parent, the importance of sleep for teens cannot be understated. I have elementary school kids and would happily have them go to school earlier so that teens could start later.

This would have been life-altering if implemented in time for my kids. I don’t want tomorrow’s teens to loose out on good brain times for school.
