MCPS has it backwards, with elementary kids starting very late, and high school kids starting too early. It should be reversed, since elementary age kids wake early and HS kids wake later. It would also help parents who need to get to work much earlier than the ES start times.

As an adolescent health professional, I am in strong support of this change to the start change. The early start time is not conducive to adolescent health practices or learning. The issue with the shared buses should not override what is best for student learning. There are creative ways that can be adjusted while still switching to an 8:30am start time.

The MCPS school schedule being out of sync with adolescents' natural sleep cycles is contributing to the mental health crisis.

Elementary school students should go to school first and secondary school students after. Please prioritize the mental and physical health of our teenagers, and create conditions in which they can learn best.

It’s stunning that having school hours that are developmentally appropriate is something we need to petition about. Do what’s right for kids rather what’s convenient or preferred by adults.

It's been decades now that data show late start times for teens does them good both in school and for their mental health.

Our kids need more sleep and need the early morning sleep to develop higher brain functions
