Reasons why graduation should be outside:

  1. Graduation may be moved from Saturday, May 20th at 10 A.M. to Friday, May 19th at 7 P.M., as has been discussed, but heat would not be a major factor at either hour.
  2. No maximum occupancy outside as opposed to the Wetsel gymnasium. This will benefit students with large immediate families that are not able to even invite their grandparents due to the usual limit of 7 tickets.
  3. The grand stand bleachers at football field, combined with baseball portable bleachers seat roughly 2,250 people as opposed to 1,607 people in the Wetsel gym.
  4. More visible seats for handicap accessibility.
  5. Previous years graduates from MCHS graduated on the football field.
  6. Multiple students in surrounding counties graduate outside, including Greene, Orange, and Eastern View in Culpeper County.
  7. Live stream remains indoors (auditorium and/or gym) to accommodate audience who prefer the indoors.
  8. The majority of the class of 2017 has already “graduated” as 8th graders in the Wetsel gymnasium and prefer the football field for our high school graduation.
  9. If weather is a persistent factor, it can be moved to the Wetsel gymnasium because the setup will need to be there for the following Thursday, May 25th for this year’s graduating 8th graders (have tickets on standby to accommodate maximum occupancy).

The momentum is incredible. This shows how many families want the outdoor ceremony.

I graduated in 1972 on the football field and it would mean a lot to see my 1st. grandchild graduate in the same place. With only 7 tickets; I would not even be able to attend. We go to games and sat in the heat to watch games; you know we will for this event!

I have a graduating senior this year, the limitation of 7 tickets means her siblings and step-grandparents would lose a ticket so that her biological grandparents could attend. This is a milestone in a child's life and should not be darkened by not being able to share it with those she loves.

Class of 1991. Football field graduation went great. I never fully understood moving graduation indoors. Let the graduates enjoy the outdoors.

This is a great idea. Culpeper orchestrates this every year, madison should be able to as well. If bad weather move it to the gym....great weather have it outside.

my daughter has 4 siblings, 2 parents, 2 step parents, and 3 living grandparents. A ticket limit of 7 would not allow her siblings and all of her parents to attend her graduation, not to mention her 3 grandparents. How do you ask a student to choose which of these family members can not participate in her big day after all her years of hard work.

Our Class of 1973 graduated outside on the football field. My daughter's Class of 2000 graduated in the gym for high school...disappointing, to say the least. Only a few friends and family could be present in the gym. However, graduating on the football field would mean family would not be excluded from being at the ceremony. Please respect the students and allow the option of their choice. It is THEIR graduation. Just make it happen, whether it's an inconvenience or not. They will only graduate from high school once.

I agree with this totally. I have 2 very special people graduating this year and I'm not immediate family so as it is now, I won't be able to see them walk across the stage after 13 years of hard work. And in May the heat shouldn't be that much of an issue. This is a wonderful idea and would make a lot of families very happy to be able to attend. This is one of the most important days in the life of a person and they should be able to have their loved ones there, all of there loved ones !!!!!
