I was just checked out by a sweet young man whose front end manager was sending him home for having an earring in. It is a new piercing so it can't be taken out due to the risk of it closing or worse getting infected. This is a gender bias, as I'm sure that no young woman would be asked to remove her earrings. He was polite, courteous and fantastic at his job. What he has in his earlobe didn't affect his performance at all. This was in store 065 in New Bedford Massachusetts. I hope I see better from all stores

I was very disheartened to find out first hand about Market Baskets outdated dress code policy. To deny my son a job due to the length of his hair was unthinkable in this day and age.

As a 'typically styled' mother of 2 young adults I wholeheartedly agree with these sentiments. While being a fantastic employer, Market Basket is behind the times with their dress code. Lets consider your mission. Words like convenient, friendly, and exciting, family-focused, value-oriented are in no way tarnished by the allowances requested and, I believe, could advance such a mission. Please consider most families now include these pierced girls and long haired boys. Gender specific rules should especially be abolished. There is absolutely no reason, in modern society, other than prejudice, that rules should be different for men and women and especially boys and girls who make up much of your staff.

I am also employee that follows the dress code very well. I don't have any piercings and don't have dyed hair. I work in the kitchenwhich is easily the hardest place to work. It's gross and dirty, and I need to move quickly to serve customers at a reasonable pace. One problem I have with uniforms is practically. I am held to the requirement of dress shoes and dress pants. Many can agree this is hazardous as we should be required non-slip shoes that can last us a little while over more expensive dress shoes that get torn apart in a month as they aren't made to be in a kitchen. The idea of dress pants does not bother me for checkout, they aren't moving constantly and doesn't seem like to high of a standard in that regard. Although in departments like grocery and kitchen especially it's an unrealistic standard. I need to be able to move around quickly, and I need my pants to be flexible and breathable. I often work 10 hours days (6am-4pm or 12-close) where I am constantly moving. Dress pants are not suited for this, they get more sweaty and are far more difficult to move in them. Not to mention, once again, that dress pants are more expensive. I already can barely afford getting shoes while having to feed my family, but I also have to replace my dress pants which simply aren't made for the kind of work I do. Please, if you actually care about your employees you will loosen the news that is around their necks. I've had fellow employees sent home for the silliest of things, which by far is not only a punishment for them. With Market Basket cutting hours the burden of working here gets heavier and heavier. Once of the biggest complaints I get is customer telling my that there isn't enough staff. By sending someone home for the wrong shoes is silly and all it does is hurt everyone especially the customers who now have even slower service. The employee gets the night off and those who did show up with their uniforms are the ones getting punished by having to add to their al

my boyfriend had tried applying and he was able to get into an interview and got told he needs to shave his beard that took months to grow. this was his opportunity to finally have a part time job and this policy stopped him.
