Mayor Kirk Caldwell: Classify Fabric Stores As An Essential Business

We need fabrics to make the necessary masks you are requiring us to wear. I cannot buy a fabric sight unseen or not be able to touch it. This matters. Please allow fabric stores to open their doors while implementing social distancing measures. Allow the people of Hawaii to do their part in this pandemic. There are so many good things happening...communities coming together through distancing. Even Waiawa prisoners are sewing masks and asking for fabric/supplies donations. Let's all distantly-work together. Thank you.

I just came back from a fabric store and heard the news. And Foodland requiring patrons wear a mask beginning Monday. Pls reconsider.

Our resources are already cut off in drastic ways. Not only will this cut off residents from making needed masks that are being distributed as donations to health care essential workers, some are being made for houseless residence who have nothing to protect themselves. For those selling Masks it is a line of income that gasses the car, feeds the people making the masks, as well as any other sewing needs that can be provided at this time when everything else is so limited. We need our fabric stores re supplied and functional. There are so few on the Islands to begin with. Please reconsider this along with other unwarrented neccessary actions. Please do not continue to develop a park at the Bellows area let the environment be improved upon but not built out for more concrete and traffic let it be more in its natural state and respect the Aina and the future needs of the environment more than this park development. Please do things to help to preserve, protect, supplify and sustain. The Fabric Stores are asking people to stay 6 ft appart are letting people in a few at a time. I am all for us flattening the virus curve, I myself want to see everyone doing their best to take preventive measures. My business is shut down until the coast is clear. I bought a small amount of fabric to make masks for myself and others in need, they where already out of stock on important items, so closing them really will put a big strain on our community more than the over precaution of closing their businesses. Why is Don Quixote's in Kaheka still opperational 24 hrs its much larger, and in my opinion far more of a breeding ground for a virus, start by limiting Don Quixote's 24/7 schedule before shutting down all our fabric stores. Impeach the Mayor & Governor

Don’t understand how the federal government says to use cloth masks, the state government says use cloth masks, but the state wants to shut down the biggest fabric wholesaler on the island? Not to smart

Not only should it be classified as essential, they should be allowed to let more than 10 gather in one place. The waiting time at Fabric Mart are astronomical.

Considering that we are required to wear face masks whenever we need to go outside, this would be something that is needed to be considered essential. Some essential businesses will even require masks (ie. Foodland) Fabric is needed for those who can help make it for others.

Caldwell and Ige are failing miserably. Just saying.

It is essential that we have these supplies to protect ourselves, our family and our community as much as we can.

I don’t agree with the closing

Please recognize fabric stores and other members of the supply chain for PPE as essential workers. Please also support them to learn how to promote social distancing at their stores. There is a huge grassroots effort in Hawaii to provide PPE for all who need it. You cannot require PPE for us when we go out and then tie our hands and keep us from making it. Mahalo!

Mayor... leave fabric Mart open..for those who are able to produce cloth mask...

It’s amazing how fabric shops aren’t considered essential while other businesses are, especially in the face of advocating the public wear masks when outside at this time. And I obviously don’t mean “amazing” in a good way given the context.

Online ordering is fine for most but you can’t judge fabric without feeling it, and not all patrons are connected to online payment. People must have access to materials if govt expects maximum compliance with mask wearing guidelines

Please keep those essential stores open for families to purchase material to make their own mask and other essential outerclothing for the duration of this pandemic situation.

Considering that providing PPE to a community has fallen on the laps of sewists who are donating their time, resources and experience, and not the federal government, the state or even the city & country, this decision is irresponsible and threatening to the community. Mandate that people wear masks? What masks if we have no access to materials?!
